Things that are too hard: This

I know i bought my own ticket, but i'm pretty tired of almost shattering my teeth on frozen raisins, waking up to frozen contact lenses, and being blown over by gale force winds.. Alas I've finally made it lower, and everyday below 3000m feels like it's my birthday. Seeing stars while pedaling up hill: not cool.
4700m pass
About to drop from 4900 to 2800m over 40km - awesome. -10° -> 15°c
The tibetan ice plain - (wolves will follow you here) I didn't want to stop pedaling, but they seemed mostly harmless.. definitely nothing compared to the wild dog chases.
God bless this man, saw me struggling and pulled me up the last incline when it was too steep and sandy to have any traction at all.. turns out these roads weren't made with bicycles in mind. They actually don't pave anything up here because of the ice.
Do you see that downhill stretch ?
Invited to spend the night and dine with a fine tibetan family after they saw me biking on the road while walking along with some firewood.
I actually donated some tofu from my bag for dinner, though they were pretty content with plain rice..
Yep, walls made out of mud and newspaper, ready for the next earthquake.
Typical tibetan breakfast fare of tsampa and yak butter tea.
cute lil sister
Goodbyes, we exchanged emails: dude@beside_yak.com

These kids should be sponsored by kleenex, i gave them all awesome lollypops that turn into whistles and in exchange one of them stole my bicycle tool. Awwwwwsome....
I guess he tried to light a cigarette a little to close to his face
Tibetans in litang making the daily pilgrimage on up and down on their knees to the monastery at the top of the mountain.
Yep you guessed it, this kid deserves to go to jail for wearing a pendant with a picture of the Dalai Lama.. you actually go to jail for this here.
awesome lil monks that found me wandering and were super excited to give me a tour.. though it was more of a wander since i didn't understand a thing they said
You think you like instant noodles ? wait till you meet this pig.
Definitely way bigger chances of hitting a yak out here than a car.. that said there are definite advantages to going through a windshield as opposed to a horn.

Likes Altitude: Not Shael

The road to Litang.. ( its a high one) - Photos of Litang itself, one of the worlds highest towns soon to be posted. At up around 5000m a hill is like a brick wall. i'm stopping every 150m to collapse heaving over my handlebars..
They look harmless, but these kids are ravenous for candy.. as soon as they see your stash in the handlebar bag it's all over. She got my last candy..

Making friends in Yajing, everyone seems to love badminton here and they go wild playing in the town center 24hrs a day.. Taken to a kareoke bar with my friend nick by the owner of our hotel.. was pretty interesting as the power kept going out and people would just all join together singing by candlelight even louder in the lack of music while some poor soul went nuts yanking on the generator.

Journey update

Getting on a bus tomorrow to kangding to start biking up to Litang.. will be climbing up to 4900 meters in the next few days, then turning down south for shangrila (Zhongdian) via some small dirt roads, hopefully to be there by new years.

Busted !

Cops: "you ain't goin no further, whitey" (though it sounded more like: "构,包括中国大陆、香港和台湾"
Allegedly, this town I was about to roll down to (after biking up to 3600m, thanks police) has some serious business going down, likely involving police brutality (china's favourite national pastime) or someone godforbid raising a tibetan flag.. I recently found out that that whole region currently has its cell phone service shut down now too. These cops were serious enough that they didn't fancy a picture with myself, and then furthermore deleted several pictures off my camera. Turns out chinese people are pretty good at handling digital cameras... surprise surprise..Thrown into a sweet 35 foot truck to head "back where i came from" The truck driver ended up taking me to his relative's for dinner, shared a room with me, and then bought me breakfast.. no not what you think. Though his accent was too thick to understand much, we had a pretty fun time not understanding each other.safe and sound back in chengdu, sippin on gin and juice.. (fermented rice wine dessert)
Yep, this is exactly what it looks like.

Just biking along...

Peanut oil from my trailmix smeared on the left side of my lens..

Camera almost fell off the other side of this bridge trying to take this shot.
Spent the night with a fine family in Li Xian, the eve before their son went off to serve in the military.
